This ongoing series offers free lessons in taking back one's privacy from big tech. Easy to follow steps to make a big leap away from data capitalism and surveillance.

🧂"Salting" your data online🧂

Difficulty; Easy

Effort; Minimal

Introduction

Companies and services are desperate for your information.

Names, addresses, locations, habits, contacts, political persuasions….the list is endless.

The more data points they have, the greater the value and once your data is out the door, it is sold, in real time an unlimited amount of times.

What do you get out of this? Nothing whatsoever.

For ALL non-official services, sign-ups and interactions we recommend you to…..

Salt Your Data.

Salting means giving incorrect, fake, misleading data instead and this easy technique can be applied to many services, emails and even facial images!

Totally legal, in fact, absolutely essential these days.

🛂 Official Vs Non-Official🛍

Do not do this with banks, HMRC, Passport applications of course but anything else is pretty much fair game.

The following areas are where you can apply a good dose of salt to make the data you are forced to give far less relevant.

👉 Email - Use a random email instead of your real name

👉 Social Media - A random string of letters and numbers or your favourite holiday destination as your username

👉 Anything from an online store - Of course, your address is needed for delivery but a name and telephone number especially, could be generic. A UK mobile number is 11 digits so 07888888888 becomes a very easy to enter number. How often does the shop actually call you?

👉 SIM cards - The likes of Lebara and Lyca will deliver their free online sim cards to any name as long as the address is entered so why not "Keir Starmer"?

👉 Any other online service - Try it everywhere. You'll be amazed at how little you need to give away with any sign-up blocked website

🛠Tools At Your Disposal

♻️FREE Identity Generator - Full name, address, phone, email, employment and even synthetic facial generation - Suggestion - VaporID

📧 FREE Fake Temporary Email - For sites which need to verify an email address, use a temp email service - Suggestion - Inboxkitten, Guerrilla, Yopmail

🎲 FREE Password Managers - Generate random usernames and passwords (and store them securely) avoiding real names and date of births - Suggestion - Bitwarden

🔐 PAID VPN - Encrypt your internet life - Suggestion - Mullvad. ProtonVPN offers a simple FREE VPN

🌐 FREE Privacy web browser - Suggestion - Librewolf, Fennec on Android, Brave on iOS

⛔️ FREE Ad and tracker blocker - Block the tricks big tech uses to gather data - Suggestions - Reboot Post

💭 Your Memory - For unexpected in-person data grabs, most commonly email or telephone numbers, make them up, practice them and recite when needed.

These real time blockages can come from anywhere. Shops, buying train tickets, cinemas….everyone is after your data and not only online - Suggestions - bigpants@gmail.com or 07654987654

Conclusion

For anything non-official, be brave and give away junk info. As long as a shop has the delivery address or as long as you're comfortable explaining why your email name is not your own you'll be surprised how little you need to give away.
